Blue Rodeo

Blue Rodeo, Canada’s beloved alt-country icons and torchbearers of the Canadian Songbook, have become deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Kitchener’s music scene. For over three decades, the band has been a cornerstone of live entertainment in the region, crafting a legacy that links their timeless sound with the city’s most cherished venues.

The bond between Blue Rodeo and Kitchener began in 1988, when the band took the stage at Stages Nightclub, a humble yet crucial venue for up-and-coming acts at the time. That initial performance ignited a lasting connection between the band and the Kitchener community, one that has only grown stronger as Blue Rodeo’s influence expanded across Canada and the world.

As the years passed and the band’s fame blossomed, their relationship with Kitchener deepened. Centre In The Square became their home base in the city, where they’ve played more often than nearly any other contemporary artist. Only the legendary Gordon Lightfoot and Bruce Cockburn may have surpassed Blue Rodeo’s incredible presence at the venue. This speaks volumes about the loyal following the band has cultivated here, and the intimate bond they share with their fans. Their concerts at Centre In The Square have become much more than just performances—they’re annual events, eagerly anticipated by music lovers who savor the rare and magical opportunity to witness Jim Cuddy, Greg Keelor, Bazil Donovan, Colin Cripps, Glenn Milchem, and Mike Boguski unite on stage.

As we celebrate Blue Rodeo’s 40th anniversary, it’s impossible not to reflect on the extraordinary journey they’ve had in Kitchener. Since 2010, I’ve been fortunate enough not only to witness but to actively document this remarkable chapter in the band’s history. Through marketing their tours, capturing their essence in photographs, and immersing myself in the energy of each performance, I’ve had the privilege of standing on the sidelines as the story continues to unfold year after year.

Each Blue Rodeo concert is more than just a show—it’s a communal experience that transcends time and space. It’s an evening of storytelling, musical brilliance, and a deep, unspoken connection between the band and their audience. When Blue Rodeo takes the stage, it’s an invitation to lose yourself in their sound, to immerse in the magic they create together, and to feel a sense of belonging that lasts long after the final note fades.

Below are some of the photos I’ve had the honor of capturing at each of their performances in Kitchener—images that represent a small part of this unforgettable journey.
