West Memphis Suicide / A Rebel Few

A Rebel Few is a hard-hitting rock band from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, known for their fusion of southern rock, heavy metal, and blues influences. Emerging from the ashes of their previous incarnation, West Memphis Suicide, the band rebranded to A Rebel Few to mark a new chapter in their musical journey while retaining their core ethos and sound.

Origins and Evolution

The band's roots trace back to 2007 with the formation of West Memphis Suicide, comprising Chris Raposo (vocals, guitar), Barry Martin (guitar), Paul Oliver (bass), and Chris Spiers (drums). Their debut album, Songo Hollow (2008), received acclaim for its gritty, southern-fried rock sound, drawing comparisons to Black Label Society and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The follow-up, Resurrecting the Ghost (2010), continued to build their reputation in the Canadian rock scene

In pursuit of a fresh identity and to reflect changes in their lineup, the band transitioned to A Rebel Few, bringing in Adam Shortreed on bass and Jordan Malcolm on drums. Despite the name change, they maintained their signature sound and loyal fanbase, affectionately known as "D.I.R.T.bags," symbolizing their values: Driven, Integrity, Respect, and Trust.

Musical Style and Philosophy

A Rebel Few's music is characterized by powerful riffs, soulful vocals, and a blend of rock and metal elements. Their lyrics often explore themes of resilience, individuality, and defiance against societal norms. The band's philosophy centers on authenticity and connection, aiming to create music that resonates with those who feel like outsiders.

Debut Album: As The Crow Flies

Released on April 22, 2016, As The Crow Flies marked A Rebel Few's official debut under their new name. Produced by Sterling Winfield (known for his work with Pantera and Hellyeah) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Rush, Aerosmith), the album delivers nine tracks of high-octane rock. Songs like "Born Again," "Rebel Few," and "Dyin' Breed" showcase the band's dynamic range and commitment to their roots.

Live Performances and Legacy

Known for their electrifying live shows, A Rebel Few has shared stages with notable acts such as Steel Panther, Skid Row, and The Headstones. Their performances are celebrated for their energy and the genuine connection they foster with audiences. The band's journey from West Memphis Suicide to A Rebel Few reflects their evolution while staying true to their core message: embracing individuality and challenging the status quo through music.

Dave and I recorded them at our studio in downtown kitchener (Sound Distillery Recording Studio in Kitchener Ontario) and later recorded overdubs for a production by Rex Lee, bassist for Pantera.
